Writing impacts today’s world because writing is the main medium of how stories are told. Stories shape the people we become. A story can change the dark night of the soul to the triumphant light of dawn. When a story of victory and triumph against all odds is told, it inspires people to change their lives. Peter Kreeft expands on this idea writing on page 48 of his book The Philosophy of Tolkien “This is the strategy of the storyteller: to creep passed the “watchful dragons” that guard the conscious reason . . . to open the back door of the heart when the front door of the mind is locked.” Writing impacts the today’s world by creating stories that change the mind’s of people when their minds have been closed off to reason.
`But there is another way in which writing changes the world; it makes writers better thinkers. Written work, be it fiction, an essay, or a headline is the physical embodiment of thinking. The mind is the master of the body, and just like the body gets stronger when someone works out by swimming or lifting weights the mind can be strengthened by repeatedly and consistently thinking. Famed author, professor, and psychologist, Jordan Peterson states this idea clearly in the launch video for his online writing app Essay, “Writing is the deepest form of thought” (Jordan Peterson, 2022).
Writing impacts today’s world by inspiring, informing, and instructing people all around the world who take up the pen and pad. Beyond this writing forms deeper, better and more fascinating thinkers.
